I /never/ expected to get middle class pay for anything without the requisite connections and no college degree (too many switched out majors, not nearly enough tolerance for power games.)
I'm super happy about it, and it's based completely on having experience doing something (relatively) intellectual.
A similar trend can be found scattered around the world, and I think it will only grow in the next decade or some. For some like yourself that is good news since different skill sets will be more valued than before and the pay increase will be quite substantial sometimes.

A minimal portion at best. What I suspect is they tested entirely different compounds, chemical and enzymatic structures.
