Shorter one. Have a great weekend. And yes, still dealing with matters. Should be finalized soon. I guess it didn't affect publishing frequency that much lol.
If you are wondering, yes, the Kynurenine Pathway plays a central role here, among other pathways I recently wrote about.
Fun-fact - I am #56 in the Leaderboard of Science writers in Substack. It made me happy for 5 seconds hehe. Sharing the news I guess =P.
I started to read her substack, compaining about the cuts in health funding... yes, political incentive here. She is pro mask wearing, pro lockdown, pro vax, probably pro tracing as well...wants lockdown for measles. Maybe we should start marking these articles with a prefix as political. If they could fact check their lies for 4 years , we could pol science tick off these articles.
My daughter earned her masters from a top journalism school. She received a grant, however small, to emphasize 'science'. While intelligent and knowledgeable and talented, her dual major in undergrad was English and Spanish.
Being a science writer with journalism degree is great, there are probably many great science journalists. What I am referring to are influencer who use specific language (us vs them, OMG end of the world title here) as growth tactic.
I look forward to every article you write Moriarty. Thank you for sharing your time and knowledge. Ive learned so much. Oh, and you should be in the top 10 on the “Leaderboard of Science” writers😊
Ambroxol affects Endotoxin induced damage in Mice but unfortunately there has been a surge in adverse reaction reports to US FAERS with 69 Deaths to 31 December 2024 for the Hydrochloride. Adverse Effects in Humans include Brain Damage. Wikipedia states it is not US FDA approved and the Bromine compound likewise not by TGA Australia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambroxol
wikipedia says this: Studies and observations to date have not uncovered specific contraindications of ambroxol; however, caution is suggested for patients with gastric ulceration, and usage during the first trimester of pregnancy is not recommended.[7]
Sorry Geoff are you saying Bromhexine is problematic or that they are trying to suppress its use? It’s a common medicine here in China amd I’ve stacked a load previously on JP’s advice
Yes, there are Deaths amd Injuries for Bromhexine on US FAERS, similar numbers to Ambroxol. FAERS was back up and running again just now.
I only looked at reports for Bromhexine and its Hydrochloride. There are numerous other products listed on FAERS where it is mixed with other Big Pharma drugs.
Aren’t there deaths and injuries for all pharmaceuticals? I’m just interested in whether you think it’s particularly problematic amd outweighs the benefits. I have a lot of trust in you Geoff amd even more in JP
Merchants of Death don’t care how many customer dupes are killed by their product and they factor Class Action settlements into their financial spreadsheets.
Yes, yea totally get all that. But like I say I value your opinion on it. It’s a standard issue OTC drug here in China and I intended to use it for the reasons JP had previously suggested. But as the world endotoxin master I value your opinion if you think Bromhexine is particularly dangerous or rather is just equally dangerous as all other pharma products which I generally try to avoid
Ambroxol has been approved as a safe and effective substance in the European Medicines Agency, but has not been approved in the USA by the Food and Drug Administration.[19] Ambroxol is also not registered for use in Australia
Something seems suspect about that because the Europeans are pretty good about this sort of thing and I can't find any reports that match what you're saying.
This product is over the counter in Australia and used by hundreds of thousands of people
I suspect these shorter articles are less stressful than the elaborately planned and detailed long ones. Supplement suggestions are always helpful when relevant. Speaking of helpful: I remember you talked about bromhexine before and I wondered why I hadn't looked into it more. Now I remember: the FDA hasn't approved it for over the counter sale in the US because 60 years of use isn't enough to demonstrate its safety. It just shows how much they care about us!
I prefer long articles because of their comprehensive nature and the fact that leave little room for people to even start arguing (lol). Shorter articles sometimes feel lazy too but this is mostly a "something in my head" rather than truth.
I do understand the shorter ones will be less stressful because it is not a deluge of "bad" information.
I am surprised it is not FDA approved, here it is widely available and considerably cheap (although during 2021-2022 its price increase was 5x...)
Moriarty, I'd like a bit of advice. B.C., before Covid, I took 5,000 IUs Vit D plus 1/2 teaspoon Magnesium Malate and 200 mcg of Vitamin K2, and my Vit D serum reading was easily 80-110 (US units, this is high). After two very mild Covid bouts where I'm sure my Vit D was still high, I got a nasty sinus bout of Covid which damaged my sense of smell for a few weeks but otherwise had no effect that I can see. However, given I got hit hard, I retested my Vit D and found it was in the 30s (which explains the nasty hit from that third hit). I doubled my dose to 10,000 IUs a day for a number of weeks and retested just now, finding that despite doubling my dose, my serum D level is still only 46. Looks like I'm going to have to raise the dose 50-100% again, with the risk that if that pathway heals, I could see my D level soar well over 100.
I would like some advice, and it could be as a reply here, or it could be as a new article because I would bet others of your readers would like to see your answer.
My request is to ask you to put down a specific understanding of what gets damaged by Covid in the Vit D pathway and how to specifically address that damage so I can get my Vit D serum level back to normal in its response to supplementation.
Thank you for considering my request, and I hope it doesn't interfere with your other work. And of course, you can also say, no, you can't do such an article or response here (it's a bit of your life I'm asking to use up, after all!). Thanks.
I remember you asking about it, and besides tangentially related "things", and some direct pathways (damage to the microvasculature of the kidney affecting Vit D metabolism, and likely in other organs), the infection itself "drains" Vitamin D, creating a metabolic trap, I have seen it a million times.
Aging itself affects Vitamin D metabolism and production by itself, regardless of how "well" you age, and this variable is very important.
My girlfriend has to take 10.000 IU multiple times per week for her low levels to stabilize after months, and she is "young". Stress affects the metabolism too, and there are lots of variations.
Thanks, Moriarty. I was hoping it was a missing cofactor I could add to my stack, but alas, the kidney idea will need to be checked. Given the draining idea, I might take 100K a day for a few days and see if I can break things out. That worked once several years ago when I first got started with D supplements.
I continually come across reasons to rebuild my microvasculature, now that I'm in my mid-70s. I gather one good way to do that is 60 sessions or more of HBOT, though there are a few other ways that are cheaper but not as all-encompassing in their impact.
My Vit D supplementation is seasonal 4000 units Oct. to late April and then a couple of hours on the beach before supper on days with no rain and temp. above 70 F. I calibrated with measurements in Sept. and early May a couple of years ago and was 52 and 55 ng/ml. Review your sun exposure and timing of the tests. I suspect (the professor may advise us) that Vit. D does not act as a catalyst but is consumed in the immune responses, so would be lower post-infection.
Other considerations should then be checked. GI upset from Covid may affect your absorption. Liver function may be affected so think about LFT's, and also PTH (parathyroid hormone) which is involved in and affects calcium and Vit. D metabolism. Thyroid function might also be reviewed and hsCRP.
It may be a challenge for you to interest your mainstream physician in some of this. A sophisticated naturopath might be helpful.
Thank you for your information, rjt. I've been involved in alternative medicine since the mid-80s and would never consider working with a mainstream physidiot, LOL. I routinely test things and had my Vitamin D intake well-calibrated up to a year ago. Imagine my surprise when that calibration failed spectacularly. 5,000 IUs gave me 80-110. Now 10,000 IUs gives me 46, WTHeck?? Thus my question to Moriarty. So I'm hunting around for answers. I *thought* my kidney function was fine, but given his answer, I will need to prioritize that the next time I get some tests. And given your suggestions, I will take a closer look at liver and parathyroid matters. Already on natural thyroid. Thank you!
What i never could understand that they always warned people against too much vit d3, due to cranial swelling, or does the answer lies in the quality. In the past it was hard to get vit d3 in gelatin capsule form, always dry pills. And i remember i used to get headaches of it. But some years ago i had a peptic ulcer and had my vit d levels tested, which was extremely low.. i then had to take a highish vit d3 in metagenics brand(high quality), i think 5000 units, eveey day for a week or 2 then once a week for the rest of my life. So, i would like to know why i got headaches from low doses (10 years or more back then these supplememts only have about 200 units (iu) and it gave me tremendous headaches probably from cranial swelling, but i never got a headaches from 5000 iu in gel capsule form... i know vit d3 is fat soluable. Is there a connection though with low vit d3 and low vit d1? I only start to read up on vit d1 since most of us probably are insulin resistant, way before it shows as diabetes and many havr low vit d3 levels as well...
Our warnings were to be cautious with Vit. D because of the risk of hypercalcaemia leading to kidney stones. Cunningly omitted was the hint that one needed a Vit K2 cofactor to promote bone uptake of the calcium.
Of course, an expensive and somewhat toxic bisphosphonate could be taken to solidify the bones and make a denser x-ray appearance. To this date I have never seen seniors comparing skeletal x-ray pictures on their 'phones- maybe we could start a trend.
You never really know how someone will react to a chemical until you experiment on him. The excipients are also interesting, and noting a 40% placebo effect on almost everything, it was not rare to see patients doing worse when brands were switched or generics imposed. I do not recall any cases of intracranial swelling or hypertension over 40 years in clinics.
Approximately twenty-five years ago, muscle builders were warned against taking creatine supplements because of potential kidney damage. Do you recall this era or know anything about it?
Misinterpretation of evidence of a couple of studies of decades ago that generations of doctors didn't bother to check, they hear something in med school from their professor and simply regurgitate. I have covered protein intake in kidney disease a few times throughout the years
JP would the vibration plate be beneficial for glymphatic system also like it is for lymphatic system? I’ve been using mine since November and I swear by it. (Better muscle tone, reduced inflammation, 100% reduction in all over body pain from neck to toes.
“AXV Vibration Plate Fitness Platform Exercise Machine Vibrating Lymphatic Drainage” (on Amazon) we have two different brands, this is my favorite. My mom is in her 80’s and just started using this. It has helped with her daily pain. Anyone can commit 10 min a day. I started on P2 (yoga setting) if you are wobbly, like me, make sure you have a table or countertop you can grab onto until you get used to the motion. Hope this helps 🙂
Yes, Angela, whole blood donation itself has good benefits, like improving cardiovascular health, and reducing iron levels (women generally don't have this problem, so man benefit the most).
Would you please tell me (in kindergarten science language) what is a misfolded protein? I have been seeing this term for a couple of years now can’t figure out what it is.
To function properly proteins must have the correct shape. A misfolded protein is shaped the wrong way, and it makes it harder for the body to break it down if it is not functioning properly or doing something "bad". Because the way it's misshaped hides the spots the body breaks the misshapen protein down
How can you help the body to help clear up the misfolding proteins. What is the best vit b1 one can take and will it help the body to clear up the misfolding protein sircus?
Fasting if you can. A ketonegic diet, or adding a few GRAMS of BetaHydroxy-Butyrate (most common and abundant ketone) while fasting, you can also add during a ketogenic diet.
Increasing the dosage of serrapeptase, aiming at 500.000 IU, for a few weeks, a few other supplements also help, but serrapeptase does a significant amount of heavy lifting in this regard.
Benfothiamine is the fastest and best form of thiamine, also reaches the brain with ease, unlike other forms.
Exercise and grounding (yes, literally, exercising and grounding will help, especially long term).
Serrapeptase is better than Nattokinase because it is systemic (it goes everywhere, nattokinase can't), Lumbrokinase is more powerful than Serrapeptase.
Here (Brazil) serrra is cheaper, shouldn't be that much more expensive elsewhere, at least I wouldn't expect to be.
What do you think of Dr Soon-Shiong's vaccine that increases one's immunity... via NK enhancement I think? I had his interview with Tucker Carlson on 2x speed and probably missed a lot but is it again playing around in areas best left alone?
The name of his 'vax' is enough to ring the red alert bell... Bioshield... I keep hoping that one of these days I will find something that does not deserve my cynicism, but in the health "solutions" industry I'm about 95% cynical. He's got the answer to all these cancers -- isn't that great??That's his pitch. And that he tried getting through to Fauci in 2020 but no one listened... blah blah blah...
But I just saw that BioRxiv is majorly supported by Zuckerberg, CIT, MIT, Stanford et al.... all suspects in crime.. ;)

An epidemiologist called Kaletyn Jetelenia something like that. Many of the top "writers" are political writer not science writers though. Funny
